A new comic was recently added to the ranks of the Creators' syndicate over at comics.com: The Meaning of Lila. I'm not exactly sure why I like this comic as much as I do - its themes are fairly typical of its genre - working single girl, looking for Mr. Right, regularly hassled by an overbearing mother. Lila's shallowness and rampaging heterosexuality ought to annoy me - in just about any other comic character they would - and yet this comic always seems to make me chuckle. The art is great - the characters are cute and consistently rendered, and I love the clean lines and simple blocking. And there are a few narrative subtleties - the aforementioned mother, for example, never appears "on screen" - she is a disembodied voice, yet ever present.
Lila works, I think, because it is light and appealing and doesn't try to do too much.
