As far as Indian cinema goes, I will always be faithful to my first love, the formidable Shabana Azmi. Nevertheless, over the past couple of months I have been utterly smitten with another, the inimitible Madhuri Dixit.
She's gorgeous. Watching her dance turns me to jelly. And, I'm not alone. Madhuri was a superstar from the mid-80's on largely because of her mad dancing charm. Her rise to stardom was fueled by some very boppy and energetic dance numbers, and solidified with the deliciously scandalous "Choli ke peeche," which I blogged about here. But she is far more than a sexy item girl, as her powerful performance in the arresting, feminist Mrityu Dand made abundantly clear.
Unfortunately for me and bajillions of other adoring fans, Madhuri took a hiatus from the movies upon her marriage, and she hasn't had a new film in about four years. Today, she lives in Denver with her husband, a cardiothoracic surgeon, looking after their two young sons.
There are persistent rumors of Madhuri's return to films, and if it happens I have no doubt it will be triumphant. I have read that Madhuri has some interest in coming back to the screen, but she's less anxious to leave her family, and so will only agree to a role if the film is to be shot in the United States. Madhuri has the leverage for this, I think, and some time soon some producer will want her badly enough to make this happen.
In the meantime, through the magic of YouTube, please enjoy some of my favorite Madhuri performances, and let me know what you think.
* Kahe chhed mohe (from Devdas, mentioned here)
* Keh do ek baar sajana (from Mrityu Dand)
* Mayi ne mayi (from Ham aapke hain kaun, mentioned here)
* Gale mein laal taai (from Ham tumhare hain sanam)
* Choli ke peeche (from Khalnayak, blogged previously here)
There are tons more, but these are a few of the ones I love the best, and they should keep you out of trouble for a while.
